U13
Hockey boys are champions!
|
|

The Stirling
Primary U13 boys recently took part in the
annual Potch Hockey Champ of Champs
Tournament. The tournament is made up of
many top under 13 teams from around the
country. The hockey was of a very high
standard. Our boys played extremely well
making it all the way to the finals.
Unfortunately we lost narrowly in the final
by one goal to nil. A great time was had by
all who went, and many new friendships were
made.

Exchange Tour 2006 |
|
The
third Stirling Primary Tour to St
John’s-on-the-Hill,
Chepstow, on the border of England and Wales
took place during September and October.
This year saw a change in format with a
rugby and hockey team also being included
with the school group. In total, there were
54 children and eight teachers making up the
group.
The
school group spent two weeks interacting
with St John’s and being hosted in return
for the time they spent with Stirling in
June. Twenty-three children were introduced
to Spanish, Welsh and Russian. They learnt
that it is not only in South Africa that a
variety of languages are learnt. They toured
the countryside of both England and Wales,
where they were exposed to the history and
life styles of both countries visited.
The
sport group’s focus was slightly different
as they went there to play sport too. They
were fortunate to have a variety of fixtures
which allowed them to interact with six
different schools. They saw a great deal
more of the British countryside as they
travelled to compete and were hosted by each
school.
The
whole group spent the last week of the three
week tour in London. They were able to
experience the wonders of that city they
learned to negotiate the “tube” with
ease and also experience the excitement of
the internationally acclaimed show, “The
Lion King”. They sat in awe at Piccadilly
Circus and drank in the night lights
together with the whirl of activity.
All
in all, they spent an amazing three weeks
exploring the UK.

participated in the Graaff Reinet festival
from the 26th to the 29th of July. The
pupils played excellent sport showing much
sportmanship and improved their individual
games. The hockey girls drew 3 games and won
2, while the boys won 2 out of three
matches! The festival was enjoyed by all.

The
Grade 4 Lekkeroord Camp

|
|
the
Grade 4 Camp was once again a huge
success.
This was due to the great number of
parents that got involved with helping and a
number of generous donations we had this
year. The
wonderful weather also added to our being
able to do star gazing and spending more
time at the beach.
The children had a great time and the
parents enjoyed socialising together.
Many
new friends were made and the children were
able to work well in their groups. Thanks
goes to all the teachers for their hard
work. |

PREFECT
AND MONITOR CAMP

|
|
On
the 18th of January the prospective Prefects
and Monitors for 2008 left on their camp to
forest Way in Stutterheim. at this
camp we were taught how to be better leaders
and we learnt how to work together as a
team. We did various activities and
exercises with the help of Stan and the
forest Way staff including an obstacle
course and orienteering. Each night we
held prefect meetings where we got to know
the type of shoes we needed to fill this
year and we had a change to get to know Mr
Whitelaw. Our motto for 2008 is:
If you encourage people to do more, learn
more, achieve more and believe more - then
you are a leader. |

we beat by 4 wickets.
The following day, we travelled to
Sedgefield to play against Knysna Sports
School.
We beat them by one wicket.
After some rest and relaxation we
travelled to Plettenberg Bay to play Wynberg
in a 20/20 format game.
We lost to them by 6 wickets.
We
would like to thank Mr and Mrs Whitelaw for
giving up their holiday and for a fantastic
tour. |

HOCKEY
TOUR TO QUEENSTOWN
On
Friday 31 August, the u13A hockey boys left
for Queenstown for the annual Specsavers
Hockey Festival.
Our first game was against Selborne.
With too many mistakes and no
concentration, Selborne won 4 – 0. The next match was against Queens, who hosted the tournament.
Too many rushed tackles and no
marking led to us losing 8 – 0.
We
woke up early the next morning for a
delicious breakfast.
After that, it was off to the astro.
Our first game was against Hudson –
our rival school.
An inspirational talk from Mr Knox
before the game led to the half time score
being 2 – 0 to Stirling.
In the second half we let it slip a
bit, but held them off and managed to score
another goal. The final score 3 – 0 to Stirling. Our last game was against Dale.
Great passing in the field and super
a super reverse stick goal by Cameron gave
us the confidence we needed.
The final score was 2 – 0 to
Stirling.
A
big thanks goes to Mr Knox, Wade for
umpiring, Mrs Hayes for driving and all our
parents for their support. |

TOUR: 18 SEPTEMBER – 08 OCTOBER 2007
On
the 18th of September, 22 very
excited children left East London Airport to
begin a-once-in a lifetime journey to the
U.K.
Some
of our highlights from the first week were:
Clifton
suspension bridge, which had spectacular
views
Millenium
Stadium, which was really big and
interesting!
Warwick
Castle.
Some of us even did the 500 steps and
the firing
of
the trebuchet.
At
Gloucester we did dry slope skiing, which
was amazing and visited Gloucester Cathedral
where Harry Potter was filmed.
Stratford-upon-Avon,
where we visited the birthplace of William
Shakespeare.
We
also spent time in the classroom, learning a
bit of a Spanish, French and Welsh History.
Some of the pupils represented St
Johns-In-The-Hall in either Rugby or Hockey.
In
our second week we travelled to London for
our 5 day stay.
Our accommodation was at the
Baden-Powell house, which was situated in
South Kensington.
After settling in we took a walk to
Big Ben, Westminister, Leicester Square,
Buckingham Palace and got used to using the
tubes.
That
evening we went to see Lion King which was a
highlight for many of us.
On
Monday it was back to St Johns, where we
visited the big pit which is a Welsh coal
mine, Tintern Abbey, Roman Museum and
Amphitheatre, Bath, where we saw the famous
Roman Baths.
On
the Friday before we departed we did our
farewell assembly and spent the rest of the
day shopping and buying our gifts to take
home to family who we were missing.
It
was Saturday and time to go home.
There were lots of goodbyes and tears
as we said farewell to our new friends.
On the way to Heathrow we stopped at
Legoland and spent the day going on rides.
This
once-in-a-lifetime experience has taught us
to be more independent and to grow in more
ways than one as a person, and all of us
have achieved just that. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without our wonderful
teachers who helped us along the way.
These teachers are:
Mr Johnson, Mrs Johnson and Mrs
Sorour.
And we will never forget the one and
only Mr Loxton!

GRADE
4 CAMP
The Grade 4
Camp was enjoyed by all; children, teachers,
moms and dads alike. The children were
always very eager to see what the next
activity was and got involved straight away.
When the children were asked what their
favourite activities were, all their hands
shot up. Some thought the Survivor games
were best, others enjoyed cooking their own
food, campfire and stargazing was a big hit
and the St George's game was very scary. A
big thank you to all the parents who came to
help at camp. Without them the Grade 4 Camp
would not be able to take place.

Grade
6 Leadership Camp 2006
After waiting and waiting and only seeing
rain, at last the sun was shining on our
grade 6 leadership camp. We arrived at Glen
Eden on the 6 November excited to experience
our first challenge. Mr. Dell divided us
into our groups and we headed straight into
the first activity. Treasure hunt, beach
olympics and group dynamics were very
entertaining and all required team work. Our
3 day camp ended with the voting for 2007s
prefects and monitors. We would all like to
thank the grade 6 teachers for allowing us
to have this camp. We learnt a lot about
leadership and hope we make you proud next
year.

UK EXCHANGE TOUR 2006
Friday, the 22 nd of September 2006 was
certainly one of the most exciting days in
our lives!
Leaving for London, England was a once in
a lifetime opportunity!
Ten friends and two amazing teachers were
on our way to spend this two week adventure
together.
Warwick Castle was amazing! It was worth
climbing all those stairs just to get to the
top! Our days spent at our host school, St
Johns on the Hill, were memorable,
especially the French & Spanish lessons, as
well as the friendships that were made.
Millenium Stadium is humungous, especially
compared to our miniature ABSA Stadium!
To see Big Ben was a really
“tall”experience.
The Underground Tubes soon became a part of
our lifestyle in London. We were fortunate
to watch a live musical of The Lion King
which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
We made the most of our opportunity at
Madame Tussauds, as this was probably the
closest we would ever get to celebrities!
From room to room, photo to pose. We had
loads of fun! The London Eye was awesome,
giving us the opportunity to see all of
London from above. As for London Dungeon,
that just spooked us out of our pants!
Legoland and the roller coasters were a
wonderful way to spend our last few hours in
England. Treasured moments where when all
twelve singing our National Anthem as we
made our way up from the Big Pit.
We enjoyed every second of every minute of
every day! We had an awesome time and we
appreciate the hard work of Mr Loxton and Mr
Whitelaw, who made this tour possible, never
forgetting to add fun & excitement.
We have grown as individuals, experienced a
different lifestyle and built stronger
relationships & bonds. We will never ever
forget this once in a lifetime incredible
experience.
